A Valuable New Resource for the AI Healthcare Community!

Nightingale Open Science

We've all heard the phrase "data is the new oil." In this growing digital world of the 21st century, data is proving to become an extremely valuable resource all throughout society, and the one place it definitely makes the largest impact is when it come to artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models are only as good as the data we feed into them. This was highlighted in one of our case studies of the topic synopsis regarding Google DeepMind's model, as they trained a model to predict the likelihood of acute kidney injury. However, they trained on data that was unevenly distributed across gender and race, which as a result impacted the accuracy across different groups. The only solution to the data problem is to collect even more data, but that is always an expensive feat that requires a lot of time and money to perform, as well as engineers to further clean and process the data thereafter.

Recently however, a valuable resource came to the spotlight: Nightingale Open Science. This is a new research resource that provides over 40 terabytes high-quality datasets and makes them widely available to researchers who are working towards building AI for healthcare. This data covers a plethora of medical issues such as cardiac death, cancer metastasis, maternal mortality, etc. that can be extremely valuable to researchers aiming to build models to provide diagnoses for these conditions.

A valuable dataset as rich and useful as this one is typically kept behind closed doors for internal use at larger companies and institutions, which is what makes Nightingale Open Science even more of an extremely valuable asset to the global research community as a whole. Furthermore, it is important to note that Nightingale strictly does not allow the use of this data for-profit, meaning it must solely be used for research with the intent of publishing for the medical community as a whole.

Thus, while AI in healthcare may be a field that requires some of the most safe and reliable results, it truly is an amazing thing to know that nonprofits like Nightingale are there to help humanity strive towards this goal together. The future awaits...
